It’s been a couple of weeks since I posted; I apologize that I haven’t been up to snuff with blog entries. I haven’t had much to say lately, as I’ve been a little overwhelmed with just life these days. I’ve got a lot going on, and my mind and body can only stretch so far. I had to put a few things on pause for a little bit to try and catch my breath. It kinda worked, but I’m still feeling a bit stretched out. Like Bilbo Baggins says, “like butter scraped over too much bread”. It’ll get better – it always does – the fall of the year is always my busy time and I expected to be busy, but I think age is catching up to me a little bit.
I thought I might supply those of you who have been waiting for a post with a few resources that I’ve found helpful and useful. These are a few books that I have read or am reading, and have found the advice helpful, inspirational, and useful.
On Writing has become my go-to recommendation for people who want to learn about the art and craft of writing. King’s writing has its problems, yes, but by far he has one of the most comprehensive and candid takes on what it’s like to be a writer, what it takes to make it, and everything in between.
Writing in the Dark is on my “to be read” shelf. I have it on very good authority that Mr. Waggoner has written a complete and comprehensive book about the techniques of a horror author. I’m very much looking forward to reading it as I’m confident it’ll certainly help develop my horror writing career.
I’ve only just started reading Lisa Cron’s Story Genius and I can already tell that this is going to be a helpful and insightful read. The opening of the book already has some interesting thoughts about what stories are, and why they’re so important not just as entertainment but as a very part of our human being.
These are just a few of the books I’ve come across for writers who are in search of advice to further their knowledge, technique, and craft. Each of these books represents lifetimes of experience that these writers have been thoughtful enough to share with us mere mortals.
So, have a great week everyone! Thanks for hanging with me, and for hanging with everything that’s coming, too!
